A friend of mine was having all sorts of problems with her computer. I took it home to get all the viruses, spyware, and unneeded programs off it. After I got things cleaned up, I took it back to her house and hooked it up exactly as it had been before. The internet connection didn't work after I hooked things back up. I tried installing the driver for the USB wireless network adapter. This driver installed sucessfully, but I was told the password to connect to the wireless network was incorrect. (I used the same password the network had originally been set-up with.) I decided to hook her computer directly to the router, to see if I could reset the password. Her computer could detect the "local network connetion", but the router wouldn't assign the computer an IP address. I tried several times to use the router set-up CD to connect to the router. I repeatedly got error code 332: "New router or gateway not detected". My friend is running Windows XP on a 5 year old Dell. Her router is a WRT54G2 Version 1.5. Her wireless cable modem is a SB5100 Surfboard from Motorola. Her ISP is Comcast, and her internet connetion comes off a ARRIS TM602G/CT. I'm looking for suggestions on how to reestablish first a wired connection to the router, and then a wireless connection. Using the Linksys software provided with the router is not working. As far as I can tell, there are no problems with the physical connections from the router to the computer. The Windows firewall is turned off, although I am running the free Comodo firewall on her computer. As far as I can tell, Comodo is not asking to block my connection to the router. What do I do next? Thanks for the help. Scott Huey

First of all check the ip address you are getting on the computer...Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then, try to open the setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. If you are getting the ip address 169.254.x.x then, reduce the card speed of the computer....Click on the Start button >>> Control Panel >> Network Connections >> Right click on the ""Local Area Connection"" icon and select properties-Here click on the "Configure" button- Click on the "Advanced" tab- In the "Property" box highlight Link speed and duplex/Connection type/Network or Media type- And in the "Value" box select 10 Mbps half duplex/ 10 base T/10 base half mode and click on OK.. GV, I'm pretty sure I've got her computer back to a good state of repair. I'm not having any other problems. She doesn't have her original Windows recovery CD, or I would have reformatted her hard drive and started over. I told her to call and see if she can get another one. I'm going to attempt some more trouble shooting before I give up. In the worst case scenario she will have to buy a new copy of Windows 7 I can install after wiping the hard drive, but I'm trying to save her that expense. Thank you for responding. Landon

Wizzard, I tried the steps you recommended. When I listed the IP address using the ipconfig command the returned address was 169.254.175.187. I pinged this address and got four (4) responses. I tried resetting the speed of the connection as you instructed. This did not reset the ip address, even after a reboot. I tried all of the available connetion speeds. When I connected to the same router with my Dell Vostro laptop, which is running Windows XP, I got the approriate network address of 192.168.1.1 and was able to sucessfully ping it. Any alternate ways to reset the ip addres of the connection on my friends computer? If I can do that I believe I can connect to the router, reset the router password, and complete the other steps needed to restore her connection. Thanks, Scott Huey
