Why does the Media Hub get kicked offline everytime I connect to my corporate VPN?

I just installed my Media Hub and am very excited to have it on my home network.  However, every time I connect to my corporate VPN to work (I work from home all day, every day), it kicks the Media Hub offline.  It reconnects as soon as I hang up the VPN.

I have had other network issues with VPN, such as my *wireless* printer not working when I'm connected to the VPN (IT says that's to prevent unauthorized access to our internal network).  But that's with a wireless device.  The Media Hub is physically connected via Ethernet cable, not wirelessly, so I do not understand why it should have a problem with my VPN.

Has anyone else run into the same situation?  Any solutions/workarounds/suggestions?

Thank you!!

This is real simple and what happens to neworks when using Corp VPN.  It deals with security and once you understand that it makes it simple.  Without VPN, your are conencted to your home network.  Let's call it NetA.  All devices on NetA are in the same area code (simple analigy).  So the PC knows how to contact everything on the lcoal network ie NetA. Ok we  connect to a corp network called NetB.  At that point all areo codes change to a new Area Code of NetB.  The PC is no longer connected to NetA.  It is called a Tunnel. The tunnel goes from your PC via your router to the Corp network and ends there. No connectivity to anything except PC and the Corp net.  So you loose connectivity to any device on NetA.  You are now conencted to a different area code.  Once you disconnet from NetB, your conenction is re-established to NetA.  Exactly as your experienced.  Corp do this so no one on NetA can connect to NetB.  Hope this helps.

As what cybercord said, once your connected to your office VPN, the rules/limitations of the office network will apply to your PC. Your network printer and mediahub is not part of the VPN connection, the only thing I can think of so that you can still access your network printer and mediahub while still being part of your office network is to have a gateway to gateway IPSec VPN tunnel between your router and the router at your office so that all devices in your network will be included in the VPN tunnel.

Take note though that you would need to have a VPN termination feature on your router and also if your office network IT personnel would allow a gateway to gateway IPSec VPN tunneling.

Just my two cents.

Thanks to both of you - very helpful explanation.  Not the answer I was hoping for :smileyhappy: but that's the way it goes.  I did install the MediaHub on a couple of other computers in the house, and those stay connected to it just fine, because they don't have access to the VPN.  I was just worried that other systems in my household would not be able to access the MediaHub if I was on my VPN on my system.

Thanks again - what a great community!
