Today I tried to install the MediaHub(NMH410). The installation process runs fine. But I can only access the media browser through the IP address. The friendly name doesn't work. I tried this on Windows Vista and XP, firefox and IE. Nothing works.

I managed to upgrade the firmware to the latest one (2.17.13). But this doesn't solve the issue.  Anyone has similar exprience. How you solve it?

The troulbe with accessing IP is that the IP address might get changed after a power outage or something. I have quite a few devices attached to the home network. BTW, the router I used is Linksys WRT54G.

Kudos!

Mine works fine in internet explorer.

I assume that your subnet is set to the same as your 2 computers.

My box is called "NAS" and lives on the "NIRVANA" subnet which all of my laptops are set to.

I type in http://nas and it pops up no problem.

Mine drive is set to static IP so I can type in 192.168.1.2 and up she pops also.

I did check my group setting and make sure all computer/media hub belong to the same group in the home network.

One thing I couldn't figure out is that which device is acting as the domain name server for the friendly name. Right now, if I use the friendly name, the browser will show a message from my ISB(Road Runner in this case) saying that "Sorry, we couldn't find mediahub".

Hi,

If you can already access the NMH410 with its IP address but cannot access it thru its friendlyname then there might be security plugin/software on your browser thats blocking the access thru the friendlyname and or maybe the NMH410 does not have the same workgroup name as your computer. Check if you disable any security plugins for the browser coming from any of your anti-virus or anti-spyware program and see if it allows now access to the NMH410 thru its friendly name and also make sure that the workgroup name on the NMH410 is the same as on the PC.

I hope this helps

Thanks for replying.

I checked like 10 times and also tried different friendly name/workgroup on the mediahub and computer. It doesn't make any difference.

I disabled the anti-spam/virus. It doesn't make any difference.

Right now, if I use friendly name in the browser, actually a message from my ISP came back saying something like "http:\\mediahub" cannot be found. It looks the computer tries to resolve the friendly name by visiting the doman name server from ISP. I have no idea the friendly name is intended to work.

Thanks anyway.

If you used \\ then it will be wrong!

It should be http://nas

or http://mediahub if you called it that!

Sorry that's a typo.

Yesterday the Linksys tech support were with me for three hours. They logged into my machine through webex and tried a bunch things. They couldn't figure out what's wrong. They are escalating the case. Let's see.

Thanks a lot for the warm support.

The case was finally escalated to the linksys US support team. The guy told me that my isp(RoadRunner) overrides the dns misses with its own advertisement.  The friendly name only works when the isp keeps silent when misses happen.

The guy told me I can change the configure file on vista to do local dns search.  But he didn't know the detail. I googled around. Here's all steps needed to make this work. Just in case someone else runs into the issue.

  1. Open startup->All Programs ->Accessories->Notepad, right click "Run as administrator"
  2. From the notepad,  open file c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, if you cannot see the hosts file, make sure you select all(*.*) instead (*.txt) in the file type drop-down menu.
  3. Open the hosts file, follow the examples included in the file to add your friendly name. Basically add entry with IP address matching your friendly name
  4. Try the friendly name in your browser. It should work by now.

*I only tried vista. But the same steps should work similarly in xp.

I take it you set the Media Hub to a static IP as set in the HOSTS file, if not a reboot may bring you back to the roadrunner page.

Glad you got it sorted out in the end.

Yes, I did assign a static IP address to mediahub. I use a linksys wrt54g router。 Assigning static IP is relative easy in this case. You just assign the address out of the reserved dhcp address range. Everything is all set.

Sorry. Forgot to mention that.
