WRT54G, Firmware Version: 8.00.2, Stops routing after a day, requires a quick 10-15 second power cycle to work properly for a day or so before powering down again….

I was using for years the BEFW11S4 Model without any issues before it finally failed. Due to loyalty, I went out over a month ago to purchase the current model. The problems did not pop-up until month of December… The issue had me thinking at first was the internet connection…

Any advice on dealing with this issue… Is it a Software and/or Hardware? It appears to be a software related condition…

For those other WRT54G users that appear to be having similar issues, regardless of the firmware, it would appear we all seem to be facing the same condition of resolving the issue after a power cycle…

Is there anyone out there that has already resolved this issue (e.g. Configuration changes)? Does anyone have input that Linksys is actively working on this issue?

Although I am sure we will find a solution, having to cycle the power is a bit disappointing since my older model had no such flaws with my current internet connection…

Thanks for the support out there….

Kudos!

I operate a small ISP. We have several hundred linksys routers at our customer locations. We are experiencing the same problem with some of the routers we have at customer sites. The routers are Linksys Wireless 54G routers. Latest firmware. We replace the router with a new one and we still see the problem. We have not been able to find a cause. Nor have we been able to find a cure. Replacing the units sometimes fixes the problem and sometimes does not. The only cause we can think of is there is a large amount of broadcast traffic on our network but we don't think that should cause the problem. We hope someone has an idea that will work as we prefer to stay with Linksys rather than find a more stable altnative.

If you have an Intel wireless card you can try this.  I came across this link on the forum a days ago and it seems to help.  The problem is that my problem was much more intermittent than some people are experiencing.  It mainly seemed to appear when undocked the computer or if there was a power outage during the day.  I would be interested to see if it works for you or if I'm just chasing my tail.  I've seen other suggestions for changing the thresholds in the router which may be related.

Thanks for the follow-up, But, although there are a series of WIFI components in the House (e.g. Tivo, Wii), the two (2) desk tops hard-wired to the router are having the intermittent connection issues, requiring the power cycle. Keep in mind the wireless network operates with the LAN components without any issues, but the Internet (e.g. ISP) component does not operate at times… Although I will watch the TIVO connections more closey during these issues. Thanks again for the link

Like nugz, we are finding the failure to be the router on both the LAN lines and the wireless connections. We have a few that are needing to cycle the power several times a day. Our guess is that the ARP table is getting full and failing to clear itself. But that is a guess. So far the only solution has been to replace the linksys router with another brand.

I was having the same problem with my WRT54G. It would disconnect after a day or two (was very annoying). The problem ended up being the UPNP feature in the router. After turning off UPNP in the router .. the problem went away. Give it a try. Go in your router and turn off UPNP.

Had the same problem with a 54G. Same firmware, one linksys support tech asked me who updated my firmware? I told her it's out of the box, no firmware upgrade, and she didn't believe me. After 3 useless attempts at working with support, I took it back and bought a WRT150N. It's $50 more, but thus far overnight, no connection drops using a ping logger pinging router, google & yahoo.

Very pleased with this unit. Was happy with the 54G w exception of constant internet drops. Check the forums, everybody is having the same issue with the 54G & that firmware.

Thanks for the feedback,

Although I was hopeful it does not seem to have an effect....

I "disabled" the UPnP under administration/management and the router continued to operate until early this morning, where everything locked-up again including the wireless (e.g. Tivo, Wii).

The solution again was cycle the power and everything worked fine...

We will keep trying…

Thanks…

We also have an ISP, with multiple modes of supplying broadband. We have been getting many calls with this same problem. It is happening on more than just the WRT54G v8 routers. It has been showing up on the V5 and V6. I have updated them to hte latest firmware, and they still lock up, needing to be reset.
I have not tried the UPnP, but that is next.  ANy other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

To All, Keep in mind I have used my unit for a couple of months (Sept, Oct, & Nov) without any issues, until the last few weeks in December. Unless this is a hardware issue that has popped up for all of us, I suspect a software issue is working against the ISP, wireless, & LAN that has it first running very slowly before it completely locks-up Hopefully this supports our efforts....
Kudos!
