I just got a WRT310N yesterday.  It is a pretty small box, very low profile, and it has no fans.  It gets hot enough that it feels "scorching" hot on the bottom, and almost that bad on the top.
I put a stone coaster under the right and left side to elevate it and let more air flow around it - there is some air holes on the bottom, but the feet are so small they don't allow much air under there.
My question is - how long will this device last if it is getting that hot?  I'm somewhat worried it might melt down, short out, and burn my house down.  As I said, it gets HOT, not just warm.
Performance is great, very stable, the only flaw is it won't allow my Linksys wireless internet camera to connect to it.  I miss watching my cats during the day.  ;-)

I think these devices are made to operational 24/7, but still i guess you should turn them off when not in use, like when you sleep at night, or when you go out for vacation. You did a good job, by placing stones for ventilation. You can place it somewhere like near open window, or near AC, or fan, just to give a bit more cooling mechanism.

I have had my wrt310n for almost two weeks now; it has been on 24/7 and is no warmer than any of my other routers including a wrt350n, wrt54gx & gx2. I have mine mounted up on the side of a shelf, not laying flat. Maybe that is the difference?

I got this router a few days ago and also noticed how hot this thing gets (just as NeonD7 stated.) Should I be worried? Could this be why the my 10mbps internet connection gets slow to the point that I can't access anything and have to unplug/re-plug the router a few time a day to get reconnected online? I never had any problems like this with the cheap buffalo router I replaced so I could take advangtage of N Draft. Does anyone else have any of these problems; if so, how did you fix them?

If it doesn't have a on/off switch, it's probably meant to be left on 24/7. However, the mention of turning it during vacation is definitely true. I usually unplug everything with or without an on/off switch if I'm going to be gone for a few days.

The heat is likely caused by the transmitter and it is likely to shorten the life of the product if left "untreated". XBOX360s are currently having similar problems: too much heat which causes premature failure. Do you notice how all the heat releasing holes are on the bottom of the Linksys router? You could try letting the router hang down. For example, I have a bookshelf mine sits on. I simply let it hang straight down with the LAN cords holding it up, allowing the heat to escape easier. If this does't work to my satisfaction, I'll probably buy a small AC fan with a clip on for a few bucks at Wal-Mart and point the air flow at the bottom of the Linksys where all the air holes are. While not pretty, that should keep it nice and cool. If you must keep it flat and really don't like how hot your unit gets, buy a laptop cooling device ($20ish) that cools from the underside, which this router would need. Make sure it is AC/DC powered since these laptop coolers are often USB powered. Now, I keep my computer on 24/7 so plugging a laptop cooler into my computer for 24/7 cooling won't bother me but you might be different.

So what did you end up doing?  I purchased one and after reading your post, checked mine for overheating, and to me it seemed hotter than it should be.  I had and have gone back to using my WRT300N, which appears to me have better speed wirelessly, than the WRT310N, but really liked the sleek style of the 310N.  Also very disappointed that they would release a piece of hardware that doesn't have all the software ready for it (LELA).

You are right about the heat problems. Heat does play factor in how the unit will perform, the low profile of the units does make a ventilation problem and i say if you have to sit it on a table or shelf you should have at leat 4 in. long feet for the router to sit on , that should give good ventilation.

I don't know man.  I have had mine for like 3 months now.  It stays on 24/7 laying flat (even have the cable modem setting on of it), and it is warm, but not to the extent that your describing.  I checked it pretty often when I first got thinking that being so small and sleek with out any way to dissapate the heat, it was sure to get hot.  But I can place my palm on it with out any pain and would rate the heat to that of placing my hand on my DVR or DVD.

I have been a big fan of mine so far.  Only problem I have had with it is that it stopped assigning IP addresses (similar to someone else's posting on a different thread) to my wireless comps. last night... but I think I have fixed the issue, as it is all working fine at the moment.  But I have one comp, a printer, and a xbox360 hooked to it and a lappy & another desktop connecting to it wirelessly... and its done pretty good so far. Far better than the BelkinNplus I first bought, it was lemon and after speaking with outsourced tech support, they were going to have to replace it.  I thought B.S., I'm not gonna wait and go through all that with a brand new product. Took it back and got a linksys like I should of in the first place! :smileywink:

As above, after installation of my 310N, connectivity became intermittent and the router was almost too hot to touch. Stood it on end, it cooled down to just quite warm and connectivity was steady.
I think Linksys should have addressed this issue.
Also, cannot get my WRE54G range expander to work with the new router. Anyone else with similar problem?
