The WRT54G is a consumer router. It does not have SNMP.

Thanks GV for the quick response. Can you elaborate what is means by consumer router in layman's term. I'm not technical on this ... Thanks Robert

The WRT54G (price, functions, etc.) is mainly targeted at consumers, maybe small/home offices (SOHO). But definitely not for large networks which run (costly) network management systems. In other words: if you run such a big network that you deploy a NMS you should rather invest into a business access point instead of using a sometimes flaky device like a WRT54G.

Anyway, that's neither scientific nor technical. The "consumer router" remark was just intended to underline that a WRT54G and a NMS are not really built for each other. One of those things is that the WRT54G does not have an SNMP agent.

As far as I know the only way to have SNMP on a WRT model is to flash with third-party firmware. One that I know that supports SNMP is DD-WRT features

The use of third-party firmware is your responisibility.

Correct. Some 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt adds snmp. The problem for toberts is, that he has a WRT54Gv7. The WRT54Gv7 uses a different chipset and does not run DD-WRT nor any other 3rd party firmware I know of.

See here.

Just an addition: I have tried DD-WRT v23sp1 and sp2 for a while in my v6 router and it was highly unstable, the router hanged too often and needed a 5" reset a couple of times a day to recover. I originally loaded DD-WRT to be able to configure my router as a super wireless NIC and connect to far away hotspots, this worked great. But when I needed to have it back as a standard router, that's when things started to go wrong. I wish I could have continued using it because it's full of fancy features not available in the standard firmware from Linksys. So it's nice as an experiment. But, at least in v6, I wouldn't recommend it if you need a stable working device. I'm lucky I didn't bricked my router in the whole process. My 2 cents...

I'm having a problem with droped signal on my mac Ibook G4.  I wanted to know if you would have any information for me on how to get a patch or firmware to fix it.  I checked out the airport and its working fine.  I'm a little iffy on adding 3rd party software, but if u know something that definitely works I wouldnt mind checking it out.
