I have two WRT54G's and have the internet connected to one of them. I am trying to use the second as an access point, but I haven't been able to figure out how to connect them. I dont have the option of running a cable. Anyone know how to get it to work?

Really. While I was waiting I found this article and it seems someone has been able to get it to work. I've tried to follow the instructions, but I still can't access the internet with the computer connected to the second one.

Thats using a third party firmware.
If you want to try that, dd-wrt will do it but it depends on your version of router.

As the previous poster stated, you are not going to be able to use the built-in firmware to wirelessly communicate between two WRT54G routers. You would have to use a third-party firmware, such as DD-WRT or Tomato. Any third party firmware will probably not work with a WRT54G router versions 5 and up, because the amount of RAM and flash memory was decreased from 16MB to 8MB and 4MB to 2MB respectively.

Here is an excellent wikipedia page displaying the WRT54G versions and their hardware specifications:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G

Also, there is a list of third party firmware that can be used for your WRT54G on that same page - Just be sure your router version matches or exceeds the firmware's requirements.

If you happen to have the correct routers to do the job, you'll have to update the firmware on both routers, and then configure them for WDS (Wireless Distribution System). Good luck!

Also, using 3rd party firmware voids your warranty.

you can do it with the current version of the wrt54g except for version 8.1 http://www.bauer-power.net/2007/11/when-life-gives-you-lemons-install-dd.html you may have to go to dd-wrt.com and find the latest vxworkskiller

Not sure if this helps but I have done the following in the past (On it currently):

I was able to setup a WRT54G wireless router to communicate to another router on a pre-existing network by assigning a static IP address and then give it another network range which works just fine.

Basic Setup Screen:

StaticIP:
192.168.1.200
Subnet Mask:
255.255.255.0
Gateway:
192.168.1.1 - This is the first router on the network that you must point to.

Local Network:
10.10.10.1
Subnet Mask:
255.255.255.0

Leave Advanced Routing as Gateway

This is working just fine on a WRT54G v5 Linksys Wireless Router

Cheers
