I am trying to set up a network but am learning as I go. I have a WTR54G with a WD My Book World Edition attached. My laptop accesses the router fine but it does not recognize that there is a wireless external hard drive. I know the port and the cable work as I had them previously attached to my desktop pc. This was before I was attempting to set things up so that the devices could talk to each other. The network is secured with WEP. When I open Status>Local Network>DHCP Clients Table, it lists my laptop and WD001, which I assume to be the WD drive. The IP addresses are different and the WD forum says that the drive must be on the same IP Address and Subnet range as the computer system. Does this mean I need to change the IP for the WD001 and, if so, how do I do that? Thanks for your help.

When you Initially configured your WD with your computer, have you set any Static IP on the WD? Under the DHCP Client table list if it displays you the WD IP address, then you can try to login to the WD using that IP address? Yes the IP address of the WD should be in the Range of your Router, By Default the IP address of your Router is 192.168.1.1, the computer connected to your Router, the IP address of the Computer will be 192.168.1.100 and the WD will be 192.168.1.101... and goes on..

Try entering the following from START>Run or into a browser address bar with the backslashes: \\192.168.1.101\ If successful, any files preconfigured on the WD drive should show up. You should then be able to map it as a network drive.

It sounds like you need to give yourself administrator privileges on your computer in order to map a network drive. Do you have administrator rights or do you know the administrator PW? Try leaving the password blank if you have not set one, or try from an account that does have administrator rights. My feeling is that this isn't an access issue with the drive itself, unless your particular drive requires that information (which should be stated in the manual).
