With no thanks to Linksys customer support, or frankly to this forum, I have found the solution to this problem (by a lucky Google hit on a wording variation of the problem).  Apparently this is a common problem that Linksys routers have with Cox and a few other ISPs.

Here is the solution:  determine the IP address(es) of the DNS servers used by your ISP in your area of service and enter them in the Static DNS boxes on the Basic Setup page for your router (for the WRT54GS Ver. 7, http://192.168.1.1/, Setup, Basis Setup, on Firmware Version 7.50.5).

There are two ways to determine the DNS servers assigned by your ISP, which have to be done while you have a good connection. One is to go to the Status page of the network connection (right click the connection icon in the system tray, click on the Support tab, then the Details button).  These same numbers can also be found when the router is working under the Status/Router page on the configuration program for the WRT54GS.  In either case, and write down the IP address numbers listed next to DNS Servers.

Now go back to the Basic Setup page for your router, and enter the IP address numbers you wrote down in the boxes provided for Static DNS Nos. 1, 2, and 3.

For example, for Cox Idaho the three DNS server IP numbers are as follows (do not use these numbers elsewhere):

68.105.28.12
68.105.29.12
68.105.29.11

I entered these numbers on the Basic Setup page a month ago, and the router has stayed connected since.  Reducing MTU to 1400 and upgrading the firmware to version 5, both suggested by customer support, provided no improvement in connectivity, which had been requiring me to unplug and replug the router at least once a day. While waiting on hold for over 30 minutes to report failure I started Googleing.  I found the above solution and hung up after holding about 45 minutes.

I am going to keep this message at the top of he board list for a while in the hope that maybe someone in India will read it and add it to the solution book.  I see by the length of this thread that I have been at this problem since I installed the WRT54GS just after New Years.

I'm having the same exact problem, but with the WRT54G with Cox also and I just tried what you said to do, and it didn't work for me, unfortunately. It all started when Cox had done some maintenance, but once they finished, I lost connectivity through the router, but before that, it worked just fine. Cox did something, but won't even try to figure out what, they just tell me it's the router's fault.

I have similar DNS addresses(I'm in Arizona):
68.105.28.11
68.105.29.11
68.105.28.12
and I even tried yours, but no go.

So I guess it works for the WRT54GS, but not the WRT54G. I'll keep looking and trying new things and come back here if anything works and post it up.

Well I updated my firmware and followed your instructions and so far ( about 10 hours)I haven't had to power cycle the router!!!! I also put my mtu back to 1500 from 1400. Hopefully this will get stickied by the mods and "support specialists". I and I'm sure many others appreciate alla your hard work. Rather refreshing to finally get an answer to this problem rather than one of the same ole canned responses. Many thanks!! :smileyhappy:

Well, after several weeks of connected operation, the WRT54GS lost its connection Monday.  OK, so I power cycled and the internet was restored.  Then lost again yesterday and another power cycle.  Today I have lost the internet connection three time.  The problem appears to be loss of the ability of the router to coordinate with the cable modem.  After losing the connection, on the status/router page the IP Address and Default Gateway zero out on refresh; on Local Network, the IP Address and DHCP table entries are still there OK.

I am ready to give up.

I am back to losing the connection daily.  I have given up and am asking Linksys to have my WRT54GS replaced.  Three months of effort, and the elation of thinking I had found a solution, all wasted.

I have seen references in this forum to a Version 7.2 that doesn't have this problem.  Color me skeptical.  But hope springs eternal, as they say.

Imagine my surprise - I've had the problem, been blaming Comcast's DNS, switched to OpenDNS and still the problem continued, so I searched on Linksys and found this thread.

I too have the WRT54G - version 6 - same problem with needing to power cycle it every few hours lately.

A great tool to watch the problem is:

I can see the delay rise, and finally my targets with domain names fail, while those with direct IP addresses continue to respond.

Linksys obviously has a problem with managing the local DNS routing tables.

I also did a script I run every 20 minutes or so (under Windows XP) as a workaround:

refresh.bat:

ipconfig /renew

arp -d *

nbtstat -R

nbtstat -RR

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

=========================================

I'll subscribe to this thread hoping for a resolution from our friends at Cisco.

No, I just junked the 54GS.  I talked to Cox and they install the 54G2 (it's the black box sort of curvy), set the MTU to 1400 and the DNS per above for Cox.  The connection resets about once a day and the router reconnects after a few minutes.  If you are not using the internet at the time you don't notice; if you are using the internet, you can speed things along by unplugging and replugging to reboot the router.  Not a happy solution but Linksys support is useless, and at least Cox will talk to me with the G2.

By the way, when you switch routers, have the Router spoof the MAC address of the old router (or your computer if you connected directly -- it will save you a call to Cox customer service.
