WRT54Gv5

FW_WRT54Gv5v6_1.02.6.005_20080616,0.bin

New fail mode, this week (after years of service):

Wireless connections are to router and modem only, no internet.

Wired connection to internet ok, 2 desktops and a laptop.

Needs to be reset or power cycled every few hours to stay connected.

Can this be fixed with setup or software?

Could this be a hardware failure?

Thanks.

Have you Resetted your Router and re-configured all the settings on your Router back again. Press and hold the reset button for 60 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 60 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router.....

Once you login to the Router setup page, Below the Setup tab you will find MTU, which will be set to AUTO, so you need to change it to Manual and change the Size from 1500 to 1365 and click on Save Settings.

Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
-Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...

- Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...

Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

I have done all you requested, with several minor variations (I did not delete the network WEP key).

I have previously reset the factory defaults in the router, but it is now reprogrammed with latest firmware.

The issue is not locating or connecting to the wireless network.   My PC will connect to the router and modem wirelessly.  The issue is connecting to the internet. The router is refusing to send data from the modem to the PCs (clients) wirelessly.

Do you really think that restoring factory default firmware (60-second reset)  and eliminating the WEP passphrase will fix the problem? It is an inconvenient process...

Thank you.

I would suggest you need to have the firmware re-flashed or upgrade the firmware with the same version. Before doing so, disconnect all the computers, specially wireless and other wired devices, from the router and include the modem. In this matter, nothing will interupt the firmware upgrade process. Use the main wired computer to do the update.

After the successful firmware upgrade, press and hold the Reset button at the back of the router for 30 seconds while the router is turn on. After that, power off the router without holding the reset button for 30 seconds then turn it back on.

After the firmware upgrade, reconfigure the router manually to have Internet and wireless connection. For Wireless, please keep the Wireless Security disabled first and test the connection. If this works, test it with security enabled. If none works, check if your wireless computers work with other wireless devices. If that works, then it could be a router issue.

With this, contact Linksys Tech Support for assistance and recommendations.

for heads up! <<<call_me_jam>>>

Linksys online chat got the problem resolved.

Although we did not definitively isolate the actual problem, it seems very likely that obsolete static DNS addresses were the root causePreviously our ISP provided static DNS addressesThe ISP was down for over 24 hours and this problem with the wireless portion of the router was first observed after the ISP returned to service. I had suspected electrical storm problems (but was not home at time of initial outage) and thus have not yet contacted the ISP.

After almost 4 hours of online chat and tweaking, the following instructions to hard reset the router and network settings restored wireless internet. Network security has since been restored successfully.

Re-entering the static DNS addresses into the router re-created the failure mode

From Linksys Technical Support (thanks, you guys are great!):

Step A: Steps on reconfiguring the WRT54G
Reset the router. To do that, press and hold the reset button of the router for 30 seconds using a pen or paperclip.
Unplug and replug the power adapter of the router.
Access the setup page of the router. To do that, open an Internet Explorer page to the computer. On the Address bar, type in 192.168.1.1, then hit Enter. If a login screen will appear, typeadminfor the Password and leave the User Name field empty. Hit OK or Enter. Take note, by default, the setup page should be accessed even without Internet.
In the routers setup page, click on the Setup tab and go to the Basic Setup sub tab. Make sure to set the "Internet Connection Type" to DHCP (Obtain an IP automatically). Save settings.
Still under the Setup tab, click on the MAC Address Clone sub tab. Click on "Clone your PC's MAC" then save the settings.
Click on the Wireless tab, and then enter the following settings:
Wireless mode: Mixed
SSID: Home (example)
Channel: 1
SSID Broadcast: Enable
Shut down everything for 5 minutes, starting from the computer, then, the router, and lastly, your modem..
Power on (starting from the modem, then the router and lastly this computer).

Step B: Steps to connect the laptop to your unsecured network
1. Go to the Control Panel then click on the Network and Sharing Center of the laptop.
2. Click on theManage Wireless Networksoption there.
3. If you see any wireless networks there, including yours, please delete them all.
4. Click on the Add option then go toManually Create a Profile”.
5. First, enter your network name and then set the Security Type to No Authentication.
6. Check the box forStart this connection automatically”.
7. Hit Next and then click onConnect to”.
8. Connect to your own network name.

Kudos!
