Have a newly installed Linksys 10/100/1000 switch SRW2048 and newly installed Linksys 10/100/100 NIC. The NIC is in a WinXPsp2 box and runs fine--but only at 100bps. We have Cat5e cabling. NIC diagnostics check out fine. Am I missing something obvious here? What else needs to happen to run at the expected 1000 bps? Suggested troubleshooting tips would be most welcome. TIA.

I think you may need to change card speed to half-duplex…so that it would run on 1000mbps…

According to the NIC's User Guide "... Boasting an incredible maximum data throughput of 1000 megabits-per-second in full duplexmode, ..." According to the SKU box: " Automatically adjusts to Full or Half Duplex at 10/100/1000Mbps" Are you thinking that this documentation is wrong and the NIC will only operate at Half Duplex and also won't automatically adjust?

Have you tried a different cable? If all 8 wires are not working in your cat 5e, you will revert to 100 Mbps. If you have a long cable run, or a run through lots of electrical noise, you might want to try a cat 6 cable. Make sure you have good quality cables. Shielding is critical on 1000 Mbps lines.

Here is what Wikipedia says about gigabit ethernet: see the sections: "1000BASE-T" and "1000BASE-T details" Message Edited by toomanydonuts on 05-16-200711:51 PM Message Edited by toomanydonuts on 05-17-200702:02 AM

Thanks. Very clear. Will test again, this time with the NIC directly wired to the switch with a Cat 6 or Cat 5e cable (without any intervening outlets or in-wall cabling. Appreciate your information very much.
