Hello friends,
I installed a Pap2t for a friend and I had the problem where it stopped receiving incoming calls after 3 minutes. I enabled NAT mapping and NAT keep alive.

Now I look back on the situation I wonder if the router was set in router mode rather than gateway mode. I believe that in gateway mode NAT is enabled so I wouldn't have to enable in the NAT in the PAP2t.

So if I understand this correctly my set up can go either
DSL Modem in Bridge mode-> WRT54g2 in Gateway Mode ->Pap2t NAT mapping No and NAT keep alive No

or DSL Modem (Bride Mode?)-> WRT54g2 in Router Mode -> Pap2t NAT Map enabled and NAT keep live enabled.

If the router is in router mode should I go back and make sure the modem is in bridge mode and the router is in gateway mode? Or is that unnecessary because the system is working and I should leave good enough alone?

Kudos!

Hi,

if you connect more than one device to WRT54g2, and you only have ONE IP address from DSL connection, you have no other choice

(as far as i understand) than to enable the NAT either on he DSL modem, or on WRT54g2 (better not on both simultaneously).

So if that now all works, I would not realy tamper with that, as the best you can achieve is again a working situation (which you already have).

The NAT Mapping and NAT KeepAlive are very commonly used options, so don't think you have something extraordinary, it's normal.

I also have NAT Mapping and NAT KeepAlive enabled on my SPA-1001 devices.

The network setup should be: DSL Modem in Bridge mode-> WRT54G2 in Gateway Mode ->PAP2T NAT mapping No and NAT keep alive No

Also, I suggest you set a static IP on the PAP2T through the IVR or web interface. Then open ports 5060 – 5061 UDP & 16384 - 16482 UDP and set the static IP you assigned on the PAP2T on the forwarding page of your WRT54G2.

Hope this helps!

Good info friends. That's what I wanted to know. On the router I had no other devices hooked up to the lan ports but I did have a lap top on the wireless. What benefit does setting a static IP have? Are there any drawbacks from setting a static IP.

It is very important to setup a static ip address, if you are going to use port forwarding on the router. When you have port forwarding setup, your router forwards ports to an ip address that you specify. This will probably work when you initially set it up, but if the router or PAP2T reboots it may get a different ip address. When this happens the ports will no longer be forwarded to your PAP2T's ip address. So the port forwarding configuration will not work.

Is portforwarding when I put 5060 in the SIP box in Line 1 Tab of the Pap2t? I didn't make any changes at all to my router settings. I just plugged in the Pap2t and changed the settings in the Line 1 Tab. Can you recommend a place to do some reading on port forwarding and static IP. I google the stuff but the information is just spread out all over. Thanks!

You need to open ports 5060 – 5061 UDP & 16384 - 16482 UDP on your WRT54G2 router. For port forwarding steps, refer to the link below:

http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=17241&p_created=1224057216&p_sid=9aG1yhNj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9OTA5LDkwOSZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPTE3MjEsMTcyMyZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PTIuMTcyMyZwX3NjZl82PTEmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1wb3J0IGZvcndhcmRpbmc!&p_li=&p_topview=1

In setting up a static IP on the PAP2T, lift the handset and press **** (Star key) four times. This will take you to the configuration menu. Now press 111#, to set a static IP address, the DHCP feature must be disabled. If the DHCP feature is enabled, you will hear, “Invalid Option,” if you try to set a static IP address.

To disable DHCP, lift the handset and press ****101 then select 0 to disable.
