I purchased a WAG160N router modem for using with ADSL line at my previous home. Now I moved and in the new house Internet is provided via LAN. Is there any way I can configure the WAG160N to work with the LAN? I mean, can I connect the LAN cable from the wall plug to the WAG160N and then using same type of cable connect to the ethernet port of the computer and have the computer access the internet? Is there any other configuration of cables/WAG160N/computer that can work with Internet coming thorugh LAN?

Hope I'm clear, I'm not expert in LAN/Router configuration, so may be I used wrong wording. Please be patient and try to help.

Thanks

Who is your Internet Servicfe Provider ?  ..

Connect a computer to the router with a ethernet cable.
Open Internet Explorer / Firefox. In the Address Bar, type : 192.168.1.1 and hit Enter.
In the username type admin and in password also type admin.
In the Setup Page, configure the settings according to your ISP....  And click Save settings.

From what you're describing, I'm assuming that there is already a gateway at your new house connected to a switch that is connected to various wall plugs throughout the house. If this is the case, all you need to do is to connect your computer to the wall plugs directly and there should be no problem.

You can still use your router as a switch by using the ethernet ports at the back and not connecting a DSL line.

I also wanted to ask the same question as him. Isnt there a way to connect the WAG160N directly to the LAN and having the Internet wirelessly broadcasted? This is because, there is not 'INTERNET' port at the back of the router except for the 4 ethernet ports available. So isnt it possible to use any one of the ethernet port as the input for internet access instead of using the DSL line?

The process you require is known as bridging. Plug the cable from the modem (or appropriate wall socket) into Port 1 of the gateway. Connect the computer to the gateway. You will need to configure the WAG160N in bridged mode.

Thanks for reply dasjournal. One more question though :smileysad: How do you configure the WAG160N to work in a bridged mode? Please pardon my stupidity.

Just to clarify: you do not have a modem in your house? Just a LAN cord?

What I believe you need to do in your situation is:

1. Connect your computer to port 2 of the WAG160N via LAN.

2. Open a browser, and type go to http://192.168.1.1 (this is the default internal IP of the gateway). Enter your username and password (default: admin, admin).

3. Navigate to Setup --> Basic Setup.  Set Encapsulation to RFC1483 Bridged mode. Enable Autodetect on MTU, and set DSL Modulation to Multimode.

4. Set DHCP server to Enabled

5. Save settings.

6. Plug your internet/LAN cable into Port 1 of the gateway.

Hopefully that should help you.
