Due to the number of posts appearing on this forum regarding the WAG160N gateway and wireless dropouts, I feel it is time to make a general post about this issue. The issue is as follows: - Wireless connectivity to file and printer shares will fail after an unspecified duration of time.
- Internet access may also drop.
- Repairing the wireless connection does not appear to help.
- Saving the gateway settings without making changes appears to temporarily fix this issue (some users have reported this does not help).
- Manually performing a power cycle of the gateway will temporarily fix this issue.
Would everyone regard this summary as valid? Feel free to comment.Message Edited by dasjournal on 06-10-2009 11:01 PM

Yes I agree that your summary of the Wireless issues with the WAG160N is spot on. I've had my WAG160N for about 4 months now and have had this problem from Day 1!! I've installed the latest FW v1.00.15 as soon as it came out and this HAS NOT fixed this issue at all. I've also posted on this forum about this issue and received several replies but none of the suggestions have fixed the issue. This has to be a bug in the FW which Cisco need to get fixed ASAP!! Because of this issue I've had to abandon using the WiFi connection and gone over to using a Wired Ethernet connection instead, it was just too flaky for me. Come on Cisco PLEASE, PLEASE fix this issue and get a fixed FW update published ASAP! Jonathan. Jonathan R. Portwood Technical Director, PQSA Services, 'Assisting NGO's with IT Support Services'

I have the same problem. FW v1.00.15 fixed the problem for my laptop (IBM T41), but not for my wifes laptop (IBM T40p). Both running Windows XP Pro SP3. I have updated the drivers, replaced the wireless netcard and reinstalled. Nothing fixes the problem. Description of the problem: Laptop loses connection. Or rather the connection stops working. Sometimes windows reports a disconnection other times the connection just seems to stall out. Repair / Renew IP does not work. Windows network simply stalls, reports invalid ip or no dhcp found. Only thing that works is to restart windows or the router. I have tried the laptop on another wireless accesspoint with no problem at all. Orginally there was a "11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter" in my wifes laptop, wich i replaced with a "Intel 2200BG Pro Wireless Mini PCI Adapter" with no change to problem The WAG160N router is simply the worst I have ever had. If the problem is not fixed soon, I will have to replace the router. Because this is simply not working. -Steffen

I've had a WAG160N for less than a month and have had issues from day 1 as well. Latest firmware and some technical support solved some of the issues with Mac notebooks connecting wirelessly, but you cannot maintain a wireless connection with your iPhones and the connection freezes (doesn't drop) every so often for all machines connected. I'm about to returning the device and ask for a refund, it's literally the worst gateway I've ever had. Won't buy Linksys again. No static DHCP mapping is also ridiculous.

Same problem since the beginning. I changed MTU to 1492. Better but not suffisant ! Too much reboots. The WAG160N stays invisible during a few minutes from my servers. ARP allows to recognize it. The Reporting doesn't work for me: I never received an email ???!!! I have the french firmware, version 1.00.15 AnnexA

Very good summary of the problem. I've had a WAG160N for a year, and use it with two laptops (with Intel wireless cards one g, one n) and a desktop using a Linksys usb-n connector. All suffer this problem. No firmware upgrade has fixed it (up to 14, but I have no great hopes for 15). One laptop runs Vista, one XP pro, the desk system XP home premium. It usually manifests itself through Firefox suddenly saying "looking up ....." and failing to connect. I can usually, but not always contact the router itself, and a WD NAS drive. Sometimes it disconnects windows from the NAS drive too. The Vista laptop has Intel Proset diagnostics, and they report the DHCP not responding. My current fix is to put the device on a time switch, so it gets switched off overnight and reboots. It's usually working first thing in the morning, but will fail sometime during the day! Not sure Cisco would be proud of the workaround. I've just added a Buffalo NAS drive for extra space. Just a new set of WAG160N induced problems. Having been very patient, I'm looking for a replacement, but how to pick one?
