Hi all,

I have recently purchased a WVC54GC, i'm still trying to find out how to grab stills.

Here is however a better way to view the video without using IE and the expired activeX.

Download VLC for your favourite OS at:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

open it, and go to File->Open Network, and type
your_cammera_ip/img/video.asf
in the HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS box.

have fun,

j.

Why is it that it doesn't start and gives me an EOF message?? It worked for a short while after a few attepts but more often than not it won't start the video? the camera works fine with the built in server on a PC...

I have the same problem with VLC and WVC54G

I get the following warnings in VLC:

access_http warning: unimplemented query in control
twice and then
asf warning: cannot peek while getting new packet, EOF ?
main debug: EOF reached

Can I bump this thread?

I too have just purchased an WVC54G and would like to get it to work on an iMac. I'm assuming VLC is the only software available to do this so if anyone has a fix/method for viewing content please let me know. Alternatively if you know of other software...

Incidentally all I get is errors if I try the command in the first post (should it be camera with 1 or 2 "m"'s?)

for example

main: cannot resolve your_camera_ip port 80 : No address associated with nodename
access_http: cannot connect to your_camera_ip:80
main: cannot resolve your_camera_ip port 80 : No address associated with nodename
access_http: cannot connect to your_camera_ip:80
main: cannot resolve your_camera_ip port 80 : No address associated with nodename
access_mms: cannot connect to your_camera_ip:80
main: no suitable access module for `http://your_camera_ip/img/video.asf'

This is on an iMac 10.4.9 & VLC 0.8.5.

Thanks
Kudos!

For anyone else who stumbles across this, I can confirm that you CAN use this camera under OS X or Linux with both VLC and MPlayer. The trick is that neither VLC nor MPlayer knows how to prompt you for a username and password if you restrict access to the camera to only certain users (which explains why it seems to work for some people and not for others.

I posted full details of how I configured and connected to the camera from OS X at http://www.jasonkohles.com/writings/wvc54gc-osx-linux, but here is the nutshell version...

There are two URLs that this camera can provide video from:
http://camera.address/img/video.asf and
http://camera.address/img/mjpeg.cgi

They both work in VLC and MPlayer just like that (except for putting in the real address) IF you allow access to the video to everyone. If you have created usernames and passwords to restrict access to the video, VLC and MPlayer don't know how to prompt you for that information, so you have to provide it in the URL, like so...

http:// username : password @ camera.address /img/video.asf

OK, I gave up trying to get the forum to not turn a colon and a p into a smiley face, so just remove any spaces from that url...

Jason

does it stream in real time? I finally managed to get an image but it was some 4-5 minutes behind and it disconnected every 5 minutes or so.

I haven't seen that, mine has been near real-time streaming every time I've connected to it (it does lag behind one or two seconds, but that seems to be mostly the buffering that mplayer and vlc are doing).

I think my comment was out of context. When I first tried (before your note) it was minutes behind in Mplayer and there was nothing in VLC. After reading your note Mplayer does show a green screen and then the video but it dies after 5-10 seconds.

I haven't been able to get any playback in VLC - probably my ignorance of settings! Honestly I've decided that its not worth the hassle and if I really need one I'll get something Mac friendly if such a webcam exists.
Kudos!

I tried playing the video using VLC on an Intel Mac (OS X 10.4.9), but VLC could not even open the .asf file. I discovered this after giving up on accessing the video directly on the camera. BTW, I have the WVC54G.

Hope someone can help me.

Thanks,
Spike
