I have a BEFCMU10 version 2.0 cable modem. My provider Insight Broadband has recently boosted their internet speeds. But I have found out that if my modem is not DOCSIS 2.0 compliant, I cannot get the faster speeds. How do I know if it is DOCSIS 1.1 or DOCSIS 2.0 compliant? I hope I don't have to replace the modem as it has given me absolutely no trouble since I have had it.
Thanks
Russ

How can I upgrade my "BEFCMU10 ver. 2" from DOCSIS 1.0 to DOCSIS 1.1 or 2.0?

Thanks,

datasheet shows the modem can be upgraded to at least DOCSIS1.1

Now to get linksys to cough up the firmware for the cable company to install.

I just tested my LinkSys BEFCMU10 v.2 cable modem on MediaCom my download speed is 3.3 mbps. A new v.4  DOCSIS 2.0 gets 8 mbps. I guess the older DOSCIS 1.0 will not allow higher download speeds.

Both DOCSIS 1.0 and DOCSIS 2.0 have the same download speeds (38 Mb/s usable).  The major speed difference is in upload speeds (9 vs 27 Mb/s usable).

Also, don't confuse Mb/s with MB/s.

The modem can handle docsis 2 if the appropriate firmware is loaded. The cable company loads the the firmware in the cable modem when you "hook up"/connect. They're using whatever special firmware they made a deal with linksys for. If you want docsis 2, you have to get the cable company to decide to go that way, make the appropriate deal with linksys, and then set up to load that firmware on user modems -- then you'll be all set.

Certain hardware versions are limited as to which DOCSIS they can use.  Upgrading the firmware on a hardware version which can only handle DOCSIS 1.1 will not get you to DOCSIS 2.0.  Hardware which is DOCSIS 2.0 compliant can do DOCSIS 1.1.

Iirc, hardware versions 2-4 can handle docsis 2, certainly version 3 and later. But if your cable provider isn't supporting on your matchine, you won'thave docsis 2. The main changes in the later models were reductions in the memory and a change to a dif chipset after Cisco took over and reduced product costs.
